FAQs

What is the sustainability award?

The sustainability award is an award granted on an annual basis by the Fredericksburg Clean and Green Commission to recognize businesses who have implemented environmentally sustainable practices.

Who can apply for a sustainability award?

Any business owner whose business is within the City of Fredericksburg (22401-zip code).

How do I apply for a sustainability award?

Complete the application form on our website. If you are applying for a business award, click here for the application. If you are applying for a restaurant award, click here

When is the deadline for applying?

Applications are due by March 31.

Why should a business apply for a sustainability award?

We want to market your environmentally sustainable practices to your customers! Your business will be advertised on the Fredericksburg Clean and Green Webpage for the entire year. You will get a “green spotlight” on our social media and that of other local environmental nonprofits. The green spot light will include a write-up of your business to promote what you are doing to be environmentally sustainable. You will receive a window sticker to place in your storefront, identifying your business as performing sustainable practices, and the rights to the logo to use in your own marketing material.

What happens if the business cannot perform an agreed-upon practice?

The Clean and Green Commission wants this to be a success. If a business recognizes they cannot meet their contractual agreement, but can identify another practice that will work, contact the Commission, and your contract can be updated.

What are the next steps?

  • Select at least nine of the applicable (restaurant or non-restaurant) environmentally sustainable practices specified in the Sustainability Requirements (link to content above labeled About the Sustainability Award) to adhere to performing for the year.

  • Sign the contract stating which practices will be performed for the year.

  • Agree to periodic check-ins by a Fredericksburg Clean and Green Commissioner or Intern to confirm practices are being followed.
