Keeping the City Clean

Keeping The City Clean
(The Clean Committee)

The Clean Committee focuses on keeping the city sparkling.

We host litter clean-ups and encourage and supply litter pick up materials to groups sponsoring their own clean-ups year-round with the practical support of the R-Board.

The committee also oversees the care and maintenance of the cigarette “Butt Buckets” combined with public education and outreach to reduce cigarette litter. Similarly, we provide education and “Mutt Mittens” dispensers around town and in the parks to reduce pet waste.

We support the concept of zero waste because recycling alone is not a solution to plastic pollution:

  • We keep the public up-to-date on current best practices for recycling and provide educational outreach materials (link to Recycling information) at local events.

  • We partner with the schools to support their recycling efforts.

  • We support local composting initiatives to reduce food waste going to the landfill.

  • Educational materials on pollinator friendly lawns

  • We support statewide initiatives to reduce waste, such as the Virginia Bottle Bill.

  • We support and facilitate local clean up events. We can help your organization or group get all the materials you will need and can even help you identify locations that could use a little sprucing up. Just send us an email and we can help!

We welcome the public’s ideas on ways to keep Fredericksburg beautiful! You are welcome to join our meetings to hear more about what we’re doing and how you can get involved.

Promoting and Protecting the Natural Environment
(Green Committee)

The Green Committee is focused on providing and maintaining healthy green spaces in the city of Fredericksburg. The committee partners with Tree Fredericksburg to increase tree canopy coverage in Fredericksburg as well as provide education on tree care best practices.

Creating a Sustainable Community
(Sustainability Committee)

The Sustainability Committee works to create a more Sustainable Fredericksburg.

The committee:

  • Maintain the Fredericksburg City Sustainability Award to recognize local businesses, including shops and restaurants, for their commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

  • Manage the city’s participation in an annual Solarize campaign to encourage residents to add solar panels to their homes. This program uses bulk pricing rates and provides educational materials about ongoing federal and/or state credits or rebates.

  • Works to promote solar and other sustainable practices in local government and in partnership with local businesses such as the Fredericksburg Nationals and the Brisben Center.
